The day involved the children rotating around a series of sixteen different stations where they were able to try out a range of different and often new activities. These include a variety of Olympic and Paralympic sports, for example long jump, Boccia, hockey, javelin, hurdles and tennis. Keeping with the Olympic theme all of the 1400 children were wearing t-shirts in the colours of the Olympic rings. Children from Swavesey Primary said that their favourite event was the Tug of War. Other firm favourites were cheerleading, long jump and running on the track. At the end of the day children were awarded certificates for demonstrating Olympic values, such as Respect, Determination, Excellence and Friendship.

The event was organised by the South Cambs School Sports Partnership. The partnership programme is a Government funded initiative which aims to increase the number of young people taking part in physical education and school and community sport.
Claire McDonnell, Partnership Development Manager said: “Sport can give children the experiences to help them achieve their full potential in life as it is a great way of enhancing qualities such as teamwork, discipline, determination and fair play which will help build their confidence and stand them in great stead throughout their lives.”
The event, which was held as part of Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week, is in its sixth year and was the biggest and best to date with children from 44 primary schools across South Cambridgeshire involved in the day, as well as over 140 sports leaders from eight partner secondary schools who will run all of the activities on the day.
In the run up to the day, an Olympic Oath competition took place for participating schools, with children being asked to write an oath for the South Cambs Mini Olympics based on the Olympic and Paralympic values. At the opening ceremony, which was led by Young Ambassadors, the Olympic Oath was read out by children from the winning school,
Councillor Jaime Dipple, South Cambridgeshire District Councils Champion for the Olympics said: 'I am thrilled to see how many children across our district have the opportunity to be part of these Mini Olympics. There are so many super sports for the children to participate in and I hope we discover some of tomorrow’s Olympians!'
