School Sports Partnership programme finding stars of the future

The Cambridge and South Cambs School Sports Partnerships are looking for young people aged 9-16 years who are showing potential in Physical Education and sport, and on their schools Special Educational Needs register to take part in a national initiative called Playground to Podium (P2P). With the London 2012 Olympics looming and the Government keen to leave a lasting legacy from the games, the P2P programme is designed to find young people who have the potential to succeed in sport. The ultimate aim of the scheme is to find and develop our next Paralympians and elite disabled athletes.

The first step on this pathway is the opportunity for any young people who meet the criteria to attend a series of multi skills development sessions which are being held at Chesterton Sports Centre from 5:30pm until 7:00pm starting on Thursday 10th June 2010 and running for 7 weeks. These sessions will be run by Luke Harnwell, a fully qualified coach and trained deliverer of multi skills.

Following on from these sessions, if eligible and identified as having higher abilities in PE and sport athletes will be put forward for a County Assessment Day where their potential will be observed by coaches and representatives from the National Governing Bodies of the main focus sports for P2P which include athletics, swimming, football, boccia, wheelchair basketball and table tennis.

Julie Godfrey, Programme Coordinator said: “The first cohort of children have now gone through the P2P process and it is fantastic that 11 youngsters have been invited to attend the new sessions at Cambridge and Colerdige Athletics club on a Monday evening. The club have set up these new sessions for young people with disabilities and it is testament to the fact that with the right support we can get these young people onto sporting pathways”
