Phill began his hockey career as a player and an umpire. At University in Scotland he gained his Grade 2 umpiring badge and was asked to officiate in the National League. His career highlight in umpiring to date was his first international appointment to the British Universities v Irish Universities game at Beeston, Nottingham.
He graduated in 2004 with a MA (Hons) in Languages (Interpreting and Translation) and then trained as a teacher at Cambridge. During his first job teaching French and Spanish for year in a secondary school in Devon, he became heavily involved in coaching the Devon U17 boys squad and was on the coaching team for the West of England boys U14 squad. The trouble was, he enjoyed coaching hockey more than he enjoyed teaching languages so he decided to apply for the job of Community Hockey Coach, here in South Cambs. He is now a Level 2 coach and has recently been appointed to sit on the England Hockey National Coaching Committee.
Phill joined the Partnership in September 2007 and has already made a huge impact, not only through the delivery of hockey within the curriculum, but also by setting up after school sessions for pupils of all ages who want to take their first steps towards club hockey.
Partnership Development Manager Claire McDonnell is very pleased with the work Phill has done so far, “The feedback from schools has been excellent. The teachers learn just as much from Phill as the pupils do – the sessions will hopefully give them the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver more high quality PE lessons in the future.”
